Although I'm glad they probably cleaned up all the Europe shows for their commercial release. I really can't afford a cd set so expensive... And now these great shows are blocked on archive (And yes, I knew that was coming...)

This is one good 72 show all i need to hear is Casey and Good lovin and Uncle Johns and GDTRFB.. Also the Playin is top mind blowing and it gets me into a good mood for the day

In no particular order: 2-13-70, 2-26-73, 10-14-68, 5-26-72, 2-15-73, 2-27-69 [insert other faves here] ... and this one.
As an initial matter, labelling this as "DS->Drums->DS" would ordinarily be extremely lame except that this drum solo is one of Billy's best. It's brilliance, however, is difficult to appreciate outside of its proper context which is the entire 40 minute long beautifully shiny beast. That is because Billy is hot from beginning to end. Just listen to his drumming during the last verse!
Eventually I'll get around to annotating the Dark Star minute by minute because there at least six distinct (and instantly recognizable) movements. The band start out very tight and in a sublime mood then veer into a dreamlike space of impossible depth. Billy's drum solo occurs smack in the middle of this dream but it seems as if rather than leaving the stage for a smoke the rest of the band has simply dissolved or liquified into nothing before our ears.
When they finally awake, they suddenly snap together and play as tightly or tighter than they ever have before or since, as if awakening they simultaneously understand what they had been aiming for all along.
What I've always found most awesome is that they tease the energy-sucking "downward jam" in this portion for only a few bars. Jerry is plainly uninterested in building a cheesy hut of mundane, major chords on top of the pensive mountain of minor grooves and accidentals the band has accumulated to this point.
And so he lifts the band higher.

Pigpen lays down his organ chops and adds that special "West Coast" sound. A real treat for us Pigpen fans. A great Pigpen show, and the boys aint' bad either. I was always a BIG fan of Pigpen's singing & playing.
Relaxed, calm, and assertive the GRATEFUL DEAD perform their show like professionals to a Parisian audience in spring.
Ah, the smell of Paris in the spring...inhale, cough, choke, cough, hack. Good stuff man...
Not a New York City crowd, but the boys manange to generate some excitement and deliver an incredibly memorable show.
I'd say if a "live show" could be a MASTERPIECE, this one would be it, until the frogs turned off the electricty during "Next Time You See Me." What the hell was that shit?
Hardly any crowd noise, just clean sound off the board, Mixed to perfection.

Hands down, this contains the best Sugar Magnnolia I have ever heard. I always wondered where the Europe 72 version came from. Now I know.
I've followed the boys since my first show on 2-14-70. and never saw or heard it performed better. Even Donna works.

This Dark Star is like great French Food. Tasty, but not that filling. It can't compare to say, 5/11 or 4/8, but enjoyable nonetheless. Although the night before is my pick, this show has some real highlights, notably the blazing Good Lovin that opens Set Two, and the country flavored tunes like RxR Blues, You Win Again and Sing Me are in fine form. Another great NFA>GDTRFB sequence maybe the highlight of the show.
Compared to some of the Europe boots, this one still sounds great in SBD quality, and well worth
getting. The band is in more of a fun, loose vibe
tonight, perhaps partly due to the electricity going down early in the show!
Also a great version of Mr. Charlie, BTW.

If you look at the song list from the previous night, it's hard to believe they played such a long gig the following night. I really love the second set Dark Star jam here. Both shows are great, but in my personal opinion, I like this one a little better. Both shows are the Dead in their prime, and they sound great.

Some of the songs in this show are my all time most favorite versions that I've heard by the dead. (I've got filing cabinets full of their boots) The Good Lovin' is undescribable. There isn't one thing that stands out that you can point to and say "That's why this version is amazing." It just is. The whole thing is sooo smooth, Pigpen rambles for a good 20 minutes, and Jerry is in rare form. During Next Time You See Me, the electricity goes out, and I think it's fun to hear Bobby speak french and go straight into english. They get the song going again, and through Jack Straw their sound is amazingly sweet. Jerry's guitar in Jack Straw is more of my favorite Jerry ever. You have to check this show out. I've seen lots of places where this show gets lower ratings than the night before, but this show still has some moments that i'm not sure are matched anywhere else [well, maybe,it is the dead, after all ;) ]. If you like Pigpen, (and who doesn't love the pig?) then check this show out at all costs.

This show starts off kind of slow (they were probably still tired from the night before). Pigpen's songs are the only one's that really stand out until about halfway through (Two Souls in Communion is the finest version I've heard).
After that, they kick out some great versions of Good Lovin', Dark Star and the NFA combo!

Nice mix throughout. Lots of great songs. The Dark Star and the Sing Me Back Home are wonderful, but there isn't much you'll want to skip past on the way there.
